A Perfect Time To Cry
Woke from sleep to find you gone, dear, Note on the hearth said it all. I'm so lonesome and I'm leaving, Guess you learn how to fall. CHORUS Feel the need of contemplation, Though you're gone and I wonder why. But you still have my heart, dear, It's the perfect time to cry. Now and then the sky will fall, dear, Now and then our love was nice. Now our home is all so lonesome, For your heart is made of ice. CHO Said you've wandered and you're leaving, Said you'd take time to call. Like the times you forgot me, Since I've learned how to fall. CHO (repeat chorus)

Black Smoke And Blue Tears
One cold winter morning, draggin' a ball and chain, They let me kiss my darling goodbye, then put me on a train. I tried to hide my handcuffs, she tried to hide her tears, I tried to paint a picture that would last for ninety years. The engineer blew his whistle, it made a mournful sound. The conductor hollered, "all aboard". I soon was prison bound. Standin' on the platform, I watched her wave goodbye. It's hard to see through coal black smoke and blue tears in your eyes. CHORUS: Black smoke from the train, blue tears fallin' down, It was the white smoke from my pistol that brought the gambler down. I didn't mean to kill him. Why did he have to die? Then there'd be no coal black smoke or blue tears in my eyes. Seems like a hundred years have passed since that sad, sad day. I guess by now she's forgotten me, since I've been away. Lookin' through the bars tonight, dark clouds in the sky, Remind me of that coal black smoke and blue tears in my eyes. CHO

Don't Slam The Door When You Go
When I had lots of money in my pocket, It was hugs and kisses, don't you know. Well, now my wallet's bare, and you hardly know I'm there, So don't slam the door when you go. CHO CHORUS: Now, darlin', you tell me that you're leaving. You never keep your promises, you know. Baby, don't expect me to be grievin', And don't slam the door when you go. What's this tragic song I hear you singing? "I feel trapped, and I need some space to grow." Well, the door is open wide, there's lots of room outside, And don't slam the door when you go. CHO I hear you've found a brand new sugar daddy, And you can't wait to tell everyone you know. The phone is over there, go call someone who cares, And don't slam the door when you go. CHO

It Takes One To Know One
Little girl, you stand out in a crowd. You're laughing and talking much too loud. But I see a little tear peaking through, It takes one to know one and I know you. CHORUS: It takes one to know one, and I know you, A little tear through your smile I see through. You've been hurt and you're frightened, you're so blue. It takes one to know one, and I know you. Little girl, please take hold of my hand, Just go right on and cry, I'll understand. Pay no mind if I start crying, too, It takes one to know one, and I know you. CHO

Ethan Pound
Down in West Virginia, back in Calhoun County, Where the woods are deep and thick and overgrown, Near the town of Grantsville, up by Mount Beulah, That's where I was raised, the place that I called home. When I was a young boy, just after I turned nine, I went with my sister to the woods to play. We were young, we didn't know how far away we'd roamed, As we turned toward home but could not find our way. CHORUS When the moon is high, and the wild birds cry, And the woods are strange and still, A ghostly light floats through the night, Way up on Beulah's Hill. Night fell quick and dark as we tried to find our way. She began to cry as the night grew chill. I tried to calm her fears as we tried to find the road. When she said, "Look, a lantern on the hill." A blue light in the distance moved slowly through the woods. O'er hills and streams our silent guide did roam. He answered to no call as he moved along his way, Until, at last, we found the road to home. CHO We heard an anxious voice calling out our names, And our father's arms soon held us safe and sound. "The woods they are so deep, men have wandered till they died. I was afraid that you were lost like Ethan Pound." "Now, Ethan went out hunting some twenty years ago, With a dog and lantern, like many times before. He knew these woods as well as any man alive, But he lost his way and was never seen no more." My sister told him of the lantern and how it led us on, Through the woods until it disappeared. My father, he grew silent until at last he said, "One just like it led me to you here." CHO

Why, Baby, Why?
CHORUS Tell me why baby, why baby, why baby, why, You make me cry baby, cry baby, cry baby, cry. I can't help but love you 'til the day that I die, So tell me, why baby, why baby, why baby, why. Well, I got a crow I wanna pick with you, Just like last time when the feathers flew. You're runnin' wild, kickin' up your heels, Leavin' me home with a handful of bills. I can't live without you, you know it's true, But there's no livin' with you, so what'll I do? I'm goin' honky tonkin', get as tight as I can, And maybe by then you'll 'preciate a good man. CHO Well, now I don't know, but I've heard say, That ev'ry little dog is gonna have his day. You'd better pay attention, and don't dare forget, 'Cause I'm just a little bitty puppy yet. Yeah, I caught you honky-tonkin' with my best friend, I knew I should've quit you way back then. Now I'm too old to leave you, but I still get sore, When you come home feelin' for the knob on the door. CHO

Emily's Bridge
Wait for me, my darling, for I have some chores, you see. Wait for me in the covered bridge, my sweet, sweet Emily. I see the dawn a-rising on this hot and lonesome day. But life goes on without you with words I cannot say. CHORUS When the wind blows, I hear you sing, When the leaves fall, I cry. Emily, you're all that I see, As you sleep through eternity. I went back there to meet her and somehow lost my way. She thought that I had left her, she thought I'd went astray. She hung herself from the rafters in the covered bridge that day. In despair, she called my name and it still rings out today. CHO I've lost my only love now, another I cannot find, But I'll be with you, sweet Emily, when I leave this world behind. CHO

I'll Love Nobody But You
I'll never love anybody but you, baby, baby, I'll never love anybody but you if you'll be my girl. Oh yes, believe me it's true. Oh yes, I'll love nobody but you. I'll always be true to you, baby, baby, I'll always be true to you if you'll be my girl. Oh yes, believe me it's true. Oh yes, I'll love nobody but you. I'll take you out every night, baby, baby, I'll take you out every night, if you'll be my girl. Oh yes, believe me it's true. Oh yes, I'll love nobody but you. I'll never love anybody but you, baby, baby, I'll never love anybody but you if you'll be my girl. Oh yes, believe me it's true. Oh yes, I'll love nobody but you.

Traveling Blues
Ain't got a dollar to call my own. Ain't got a place to call my home. A rambler's life is the life I choose. Gonna ramble 'round with the traveling blues. CHORUS Those traveling blues are whispering low, Saying "You can't stay, boy, you've got to go." Got the urge to roam in the soles of my shoes. Gonna hit the road with the traveling blues. Now, baby, you've been sweet and kind You'll be hard to get off my mind But you deserve a man that's true, Not one who sings these traveling blues. CHO Now, baby, I'll be on my way. Our paths may cross again someday. Be thankful you don't have to choose, Between a home and the traveling blues. CHO

My Heart Cries Out
Oh girl, can you tell me in the moonlight, Who calls for the words you speak? He no longer loves my little darling, She's just his girl for the week. CHORUS My heart cries for the one that I love. Can she be calling from the distance beyond? She left me stranded like a stone on the mountain. Please tell me why she had to go on. The snow is gone from the mountain, Just like my love gonna go. From your heart it's torn forever, I'm callin for the words that you know. Well, the rain it falls in your footsteps, Like a river that flows to the sea. I've tried so hard, my little darling, But you will never love me.

Bridge To Gloryland
I was raised from childhood to follow in the light. Mom and Dad did their best to teach me wrong from right, But when I was seventeen, they were called away, And I found as time went on that I began to stray. I was a thief, I was a gambler, and I did some drinking, too. My life felt so aimless, and I didn't know what to do. Then one night I stumbled home and fell into a dream. I woke in tears when I recalled the things that I had seen. CHORUS I saw my mother, I saw my father. (Momma was a-crying) (Daddy shook my hand) They said, "Son, don't build your house on shifting sands. Go home and change...., reach out and hold the Savior's hand, (Change your way of living) (hold the Savior's hand), And you'll be walking 'cross that bridge to Gloryland. I arose determined to turn my life around. I cast off the chains of sin where Satan had me bound. I felt my heart had opened and I knew I'm not alone, And I could clearly see the narrow path that leads me home. Now, as I grow older, I do my best each day. Temptation sometimes comes along and leads me from the way. But if I start to find myself backsliding from the right, I close my eyes and I recall the words I heard that night. CHO (repeat chorus)
